The truth about composite
TimberTech doesn’t fail. Installations do.
Composite boards carry 30–50-year warranties because the material genuinely lasts. When a composite deck goes bad early, it’s almost always the installation: gapping ignored so boards buckle in August, hidden fasteners over-torqued, a ledger lagged through siding with no flashing, framing spans stretched past spec so the deck bounces.
TimberTech publishes exact installation requirements — gap tolerances by temperature, fastener systems by board profile, span tables — and the warranty assumes they were followed. We install to that written spec, photograph the stages, and put our own 5-year workmanship warranty on top, covering exactly the part the manufacturer’s paper doesn’t: the labor.
It’s the same reason Hardie siding installs live or die by the installer — a lesson we’ve written up in detail. Same physics, horizontal.

Since July 2025, TimberTech’s parent company has been James Hardie — the same manufacturer whose siding we’re a Select Contractor for. One family for walls and deck, one crew accountable for both.
The contractor programs are still separate — there’s no combined Hardie–TimberTech certification.

Does TimberTech require a certified installer for the warranty?
No — TimberTech’s product warranties cover the boards when they’re installed per the written installation instructions, whoever installs them. What the instructions demand is precision: temperature-dependent gapping, approved fasteners, correct joist spacing. That’s the real reason installer choice matters — and why we document our installs stage by stage.
Do you install hidden fasteners?
On every TimberTech deck: CONCEALoc stainless clips in the grooved field boards, Cortex collated plugs on square-edge borders and stair treads. No face screws marching across your deck — and no shortcuts where the two systems meet at picture-frame borders.
Can you install TimberTech over my existing frame?
If the frame verifies sound — ledger, posts, joists at composite-rated spacing — yes: that’s re-decking at $55–75/sf. Composite is heavier and floppier than wood, so older 24″-spaced frames usually need sistered joists first; we check before quoting, not after demo.
