Bellevue Hardie New Construction Siding — Mixed Lap & Panel with Composite Wood Accents
This is a Bellevue new construction siding project — we came in fresh from the framer with bare sheathing, ready to build the entire envelope from scratch. No tear-off, no surprises behind old cladding, just a clean canvas to lay down a Pacific Northwest wall assembly the way it should be built. The package: HydroGap drainable WRB, HardiePlank lap and HardiePanel field in HZ10 formulation, vented Hardie soffit at the eaves, and composite wood accent panels at the entry and a feature elevation for warmth without the maintenance load.
About this Bellevue new-construction project
Most of our work is re-sides on existing homes — tear-off, substrate inspection, hidden rot. New construction is a different rhythm. We coordinate with the framer’s schedule, take the home from bare sheathing, and walk every elevation against the architectural set before any WRB goes up. The advantage: every flashing, every transition, every fastener pattern is set up correctly the first time, with photo documentation handed to the homeowner at completion. As an experienced Bellevue siding contractor, we treat new construction the same way we treat a re-side — envelope first, cladding second.
The architectural intent on this Bellevue home was to mix three surfaces. HardiePlank lap as the workhorse on the bulk of the elevations gives the long horizontal lines that read traditional. HardiePanel in the gables breaks visual rhythm so the elevations don’t come across as a single horizontal stripe. Composite wood accent panels at the entry and a feature elevation provide the warmth of natural wood without the back-priming, refinishing, and 5–8 year repaint cycle that real cedar would carry.

What we specified
- HardiePlank® Lap (HZ10) on the bulk of the elevations — ColorPlus factory finish for the 15-year fade warranty, fastened per James Hardie’s published HZ10 spec for the Pacific Northwest.
- HardiePanel® field in the gables and feature areas, with sealed butt joints and intentional reveal lines at the lap transitions.
- Vented Hardie soffit at the eaves — non-combustible (matters near tree exposure on the Eastside) and lets the wall assembly breathe at the top.
- HydroGap® Drainable WRB from Benjamin Obdyke as our envelope standard — the integrated drainage gap moves any incidental moisture out of the wall before it can reach sheathing. More on WRB and PNW moisture management →
- Composite wood accent panels at the entry and feature elevation — gives the warmth of wood without back-priming, refinishing, or a 5–8 year repaint cycle. Stainless fasteners, expansion gaps to spec.
- Window and door flashings integrated with the WRB — sill pan, head flashing with end dams, kickout flashings at every roof intersection. On a new build, this is where you make sure every opening is set up to stay dry for the next 40 years.
- HardieTrim® at corners, windows, and frieze — pre-finished to match the field color.
- Caulk and sealant at all butt joints and trim transitions, color-matched touch-up at fastener heads.

The install order on a new construction Bellevue project
On a new build, the install rhythm is different from a re-side because every step happens in clean sequence rather than after demo. Here’s how this Bellevue project went:
- Walk every elevation against the architectural set before any WRB. Note window and door rough-openings, plate heights, beam transitions, and any architectural detail that needs special flashing.
- Install HydroGap drainable WRB across the entire substrate, shingle-style, with overlaps and seams sealed per manufacturer spec. On a new build, the WRB goes on a clean substrate so coverage is complete and consistent.
- Integrate window and door flashings with the WRB — sill pan, head flashing with end dams, kickout flashings at every roof intersection. This is the step that decides whether the wall lasts 10 years or 40.
- Install vertical furring strips for the rainscreen cavity at the gable panel areas, vented top and bottom with insect mesh. Why rainscreen ventilation matters in our climate →
- Install HardiePlank lap to HZ10 spec on the lap elevations, with proper fastener depth and pattern.
- Install HardiePanel in the gable fields with sealed butt joints and intentional reveal lines at the lap transitions.
- Install vented Hardie soffit at the eaves, mitred to clean fascia transitions.
- Install composite wood accent panels at the entry and feature elevation last, with stainless fasteners and proper expansion details.
- Color-matched touch-up at fastener heads, caulk-and-tool at every transition, end-of-project magnet sweep for nails.

What the mixed-material approach buys this Bellevue homeowner
Three things, in order of how much they matter to a Bellevue homeowner who’s actually living in this new build:
- The wall meets Pacific Northwest exposure from day one. HardiePlank in HZ10 formulation has zero moisture absorption, won’t rot, won’t warp in our freeze-thaw cycles, and holds its ColorPlus factory finish for 15+ years. The HydroGap WRB behind it does the heavy lifting on moisture management. New construction means none of this is fighting against an existing wall’s history.
- The home doesn’t look templated. Lap on the main walls, panel in the gables, composite wood at the entry — the eye reads three different surfaces and the home looks designed rather than spec-built. Important on the Eastside where most new construction is competing for a similar buyer at resale.
- Maintenance load is honest. The Hardie surfaces are wash-only for the next 15+ years. The composite wood accents at the entry need an inspection-and-clean every couple of years but won’t demand re-staining. No part of this wall is going to surprise the owner with a five-figure refresh in year 7.

The takeaway for a Bellevue new construction siding project
If you’re building new in Bellevue or the Eastside and balancing long-term performance, design intent, and budget, this kind of mixed Hardie + composite accent build is the sweet spot. The Hardie HZ10 product handles the durability requirement, the panel-and-lap mix handles the visual interest, and a small amount of composite wood gives you the warmth of wood without the maintenance bill.
On new construction, the non-negotiable pieces are still the WRB and the flashings. We install HydroGap drainable WRB on every Bellevue project — new construction or re-side — and we integrate every window and door flashing with the new envelope. That’s the difference between a wall that performs for 40 years and a wall that fails quietly behind the cladding starting in year 8.
