What salt air does to an ordinary deck
Galvanized hardware that lasts decades inland pits and streaks within a few years over salt water. On Mukilteo’s beach and bluff homes we build decks the way we build saltfront walls: stainless steel fasteners and connectors where weather reaches, corrosion-rated post hardware, and TimberTech’s fully-capped boards that don’t care about salt fog the way stained wood does.
Bluff-top sites add wind: guardrails and stair rails get engineered connections, not just code-minimum nailing, because a 40-knot southerly finds every shortcut. It’s the same marine discipline behind our Mukilteo siding work — decks just put it horizontal.

Within salt-fog reach of the Sound, yes — galvanized coatings pit and bleed rust streaks down fascia within a few seasons. Stainless fasteners and connectors cost a 10–15% premium on the hardware lines and remove the problem for decades. Inland Mukilteo (Harbour Pointe uplands, 525 corridor) can run standard coated hardware honestly.
Which railing is best for a view deck?
Stainless cable if you want near-invisibility with marine-grade durability; glass if you want a wind-break and don’t mind squeegee duty; cedar with a slim profile if warmth matters more than the last few degrees of sightline. All three meet the 36″ guardrail code. We bring samples to the assessment and mock up heights on site.
Can you rebuild a deck on a bluff-top house?
Yes — elevated and slope-adjacent decks are engineered projects: proper footings, sometimes stamped structural plans, wind-detailed rails. We coordinate the engineering, pull the City of Mukilteo permit at cost, and build from the plans.
