Fiber cement dominates the Seattle re-siding market — and for good reason. But cedar remains the superior choice in specific situations. The trick is knowing which category your home falls into.
Western Red Cedar has a grain depth and warmth that no manufactured product replicates. On Craftsman homes in Fremont, bungalows in Wallingford, and mid-century homes on Capitol Hill, cedar is architecturally correct in a way that fiber cement and engineered wood are not. When maintained properly, cedar develops a rich patina that synthetic materials can’t match.
Cedar heartwood contains natural thujaplicins — organic compounds that resist fungal decay, insect damage, and moisture absorption. These aren’t unlimited (they degrade over 40–60 years), but they give cedar a significant advantage over untreated softwoods. When combined with proper installation, cedar performs exceptionally in the Pacific Northwest’s wet conditions.
Cedar has one of the lowest shrink-swell coefficients of any commercial softwood. In Seattle’s constant wet-dry cycling, this matters: cedar moves less than fir, pine, or spruce siding, which means fewer gaps opening at joints and less paint film stress. Less movement = longer paint life = fewer maintenance cycles over the lifespan of the siding.

How We Install Cedar Siding in Seattle — The Details That Make It Last
Most cedar siding failures in Seattle trace back to installation shortcuts, not material defects. Here is exactly how GP General Corp installs cedar — and why each step matters in the Pacific Northwest.
Every cedar board is primed on all six sides (front, back, both edges, both ends) with an oil-based primer before it goes on the wall. This seals the wood against moisture absorption from every direction — including the back face that sits against the wall assembly. Most contractors skip back-priming. In Seattle’s climate, unprimed backs absorb moisture from the wall cavity, causing cupping, warping, and premature paint failure.
We install a code-compliant WRB — properly lapped, taped at all seams, and integrated at every window and door flange. The WRB is the second line of defense behind the cedar: any moisture that makes it past the siding surface hits the WRB and drains down rather than into the sheathing. We install a 3/8” ventilated drainage gap between the WRB and the back of the cedar siding using furring strips or a drainage mat like HydroGap. This gap allows any moisture behind the siding to drain out at the bottom and lets air circulate to dry the wall assembly. Cedar’s natural tannins react with standard galvanized and electro-plated fasteners, causing dark streaking down the siding face. We use stainless steel ring-shank nails on every cedar project — they don’t react with the tannins, they resist corrosion indefinitely, and they hold better in the PNW’s damp conditions than standard fasteners.
Every window, door, vent, hose bib, and electrical penetration gets properly flashed — with kickout flashings at roof-wall intersections, head flashings above windows, and correctly lapped integration with the WRB. Failed or missing flashings are the #1 cause of dry rot behind cedar siding in Seattle.
Every field-cut end is sealed with primer before installation. End grain absorbs moisture at 10–15x the rate of face grain — an unsealed cut end in a joint or at a trim transition is an open moisture pathway into the board. This is another step most contractors skip because it slows production. We do it on every cut, every board.

Tight-grain, knot-free Western Red Cedar heartwood. This is the premium choice for visible, high-quality residential siding. Clear grade holds paint and stain most uniformly, has the highest natural decay resistance (all heartwood, minimal sapwood), and delivers the cleanest appearance. Recommended for primary residential siding on homes where appearance and longevity are the priority.
Sound, tight knots in an otherwise clear board. STK cedar is structurally sound and performs well with stain finishes that embrace the knotty character. A cost-effective step down from clear grade — appropriate for accent areas, gable ends, or homeowners who prefer a more rustic aesthetic. Not recommended for paint finishes, as knots bleed through paint over time.
The most common cedar siding profile in Seattle. Boards are thicker at the bottom and thinner at the top, overlapping to shed water. Available in 6”, 8”, and 10” nominal widths. Wider reveal (the visible face) creates a more contemporary look; narrower reveal is traditional for Craftsman and bungalow-style homes.
Interlocking profile that creates a tight, flat surface. Common on soffits, porches, and accent walls. Can be installed horizontally or vertically. In Seattle, T&G cedar requires careful back-priming because the interlocking joints can trap moisture if the drainage plane isn’t correctly detailed.
Machine-cut shingles and hand-split shakes provide a textured, dimensional exterior common on Cape Cod, Craftsman, and Pacific Northwest-style homes.
